So you're thinking about becoming a volunteer...fantastic! We've got the answers to any questions you may have right here:
Volunteering can be a really reawarding experience. As well as helping to make coping with ME/CFS easier for others, you can get a lot out of it and make new friends! Plus, it looks great on your CV and gives you the opportunity to shape AYME for the future! You can even work towards awards, like the V-inspired award. Most importantly, all our volunteers have ME/CFS, so we'll totally understand if you're having a bad day.
What can I do?
There are four different teams that AYME members can volunteer for:
- Online: Put your digital skills to good use and join the online team. If you're a social media guru this is the team for you. Or perhaps you fancy co-ordinating the secret Santa, or acting as a peer support moderator on our message board. If you're good with IT, online is for you!
- PR/Fundraising: Have you got what it takes to raise AYME's profile? Whether it's rallying members, friends and parents to get people talking about ME/CFS, or co-ordinating fundraising events, promotions and ideas - there's a job to suit everyone!
- Special services: Help our severely affected members (SAMs) and junior AYME members (JAMmers). This is an exciting team with a variety of roles available including buddies, Christmas card writers and new roles coming soon...!
- Membership services: Be a real social butterfly and help others get connected. In this team, you'll help put members in touch with each other in a variety of ways; including penpals, emates, notebooks, Uni friends, birthday card writers and local contacts.
Can anyone be a volunteer?
You must be an AYME member in order to become a volunteer. (If you haven't signed up yet, remember it's free to join!) To sign up, visit the volunteering page in the members' area and send us your details, letting us know what you're interested in. We'll then put you on our volunteer list, and when we see something which matches what you're looking for, we'll contact you.
In the meantime, please remember that you can also help with fundraising and raising awareness at any time.
Thank you for your interest in becoming an AYME volunteer. We look forward to welcoming you to the team soon!
Hear from our volunteers themselves:
"I love working for AYME in all my roles. The charity has helped me so much over the years so it feels fantastic to give something back. The work with the web team has given me an opportunity to develop my programming skills as well as team skills that are really important, especially when I'm well enough to apply for a job!"
"I really enjoy the work that I do and the people I work with, it's lots of fun and it feels so good to help the charity that has supported me so much."

AYME was one of just 60 organisations to be awarded the prestigious Queen's Diamond Jubilee Volunteering Award 2012.
The awards recognise voluntary groups that operate across the UK. AYME was chosen as a winner for harnessing the hard work, commitment and generosity of its many volunteers to improve the lives of children and young people struck down by the chronic debilitating condition ME/CFS.
